Since TopoZone was recently bought by Trails.com, I didn’t know of a good source for free online topography maps. Where’s the dotcom freeconomics of that? Where’s the something for nothing?

However, freeconomics lives on. I recently found a good source out there, putting our tax money to use. The USGS Store offers a Map Locator that creates printable high resolution topography maps in different scales. This includes a topography map of Coupeville that can be ordered online in a color printed version and delivered to you. Or, even more interesting, you can download the high resolution version of the topography map for free by honing in on any US location via the Map Locator.

Then, to up the ante, Google Earth of course enables something even cooler. By downloading this file, you can directly overlay USGS topo maps into your Google Earth world…
