SUMMARY

Gary Gunderson is a metal sculptor from Issaquah Washington who focuses on unique art and kinetic sculpture.  He merges thoughtful design with a fun world view to create a wow experience for people who have the opportunity to experience his work. “Pentillium” demonstrates Gary’s principle of “4D art”, where the underlying 3D art changes over time.  Pentillium was originally exhibited at Burning Man in a different sound-oriented incarnation.  To ensure it is site appropriate for the Sculpture Forest, Gary altered the sculpture into what can now be visualized as a plant or an upside down flower, growing toward the shiny sun among salal and decomposing fallen trees.  His sculpture may even continue to change further in the future here.

ABOUT THE SCULPTURE

Pentillium demonstrates Gary’s principle of “4D art”, where the underlying 3D art changes over time.  Pentillium has a history where it was originally exhibited at the Burning Man art festival in a different sound-oriented incarnation.  To make it site appropriate for the Sculpture Forest, Gary transformed it into what can be interpreted as a plant or an upside down flower.  The sculpture may even continue to change further in future here within the Sculpture Forest.

ABOUT THE SCULPTOR

Gary is a metal sculptor from Issaquah who focuses on unique art and kinetic, moving sculpture.  He merges thoughtful design with a fun world view to create a new “wow” experience for people who have the opportunity to experience his work. Born and raised in West Seattle, he has lived his entire life in the Seattle area. A love of craftsmanship led him to furniture and cabinet making in his 20s. Realizing he was an inventor at his core, Gary then earned a degree in mechanical engineering in his 30s from the University of Washington and spent a career doing mechanical design. In parallel, he pursued his love of creativity and craftsmanship in his free time, as well. Fortunate to have finally retired from cubicle life, he now spends his time building what is in his head, exploring the world where art, engineering, interactivity, and whimsy intersect.
