SUMMARY

As a Pacific Northwest artist for the Portland Oregon area, Jennifer Kapnek loves the deep connection to nature that lives in the heart of our west coast culture. She regularly examines growth, change, impermanence, and integration to inform her process. “All Things Equal” uniquely brings 2D painting into our world of 3D outdoor art. The sculpture requires interaction and thought from you as a viewer since the passage of time across seasons occurs as you walk and observe from one side to the other.  27 verdant leaves are first revealed as spring and summer, passing through to 26 leaves of autumn with one leaf fallen away to the ground.

ABOUT THE SCULPTURE

The 5-foot panel is both immersed and enveloped in natural wood elements. Two separate tree forms are incorporated and shared by each side as both an extension of the painted trunk and the anchoring base. The natural curves and texture are highlighted by the simplicity and openness that extends down to the base plate. Painted in a transitioning silvery grey, Jennifer’s intention is for the piece to glow within the forest setting.

Each side has the image of a tree, at different points in the season. One side is uplifted and buoyant with 27 bright green leaves. The other shows the experience and weight of seasonal completion with 26 corresponding golden yellow leaves, one fallen to the ground. Jennifer values and admires both phases equally and finds profound, real-life relevance in this simple message.

ABOUT THE SCULPTOR

As a Pacific Northwest artist, Jennifer loves the deep connection to nature that lives in the heart of our west coast culture. Her sculptures and paintings celebrate this connection.

Exploring the natural world in her work has offered intrinsic opportunities to consider transition, flexibility, adaptivity and regeneration. She regularly examines growth, change, impermanence, and integration to inform her process.

Made from wood, her pieces are always constructed and finished to be enduring. Dimensional elements, rough or broken edges, and branches that blend seamlessly into the painting are a constant in Jennifer’s work. She builds her work for graceful durability.  Points of connection are engineered to disappear. She focuses on a clean simplicity with sharpened intention and a demand for balance.

Inspired by color, Jennifer saturates the field with many layers of acrylic paint. Her work is bright, light-filled, warm and alluring. She uses a visual language that is inherently inclusive, as the experience of nature crosses cultural, economic and social divisions.
