SUMMARY
Matt Babcock is a professional metal sculptor from Seattle who creates abstract visions of nature and other themes and has exhibited widely, focusing on essential elements to tell a visual story. What motivates him is sparking people’s curiosity in ways that help them connect with something larger than themselves. Otters are playful. So, “Standing Otter” was playfully positioned to peek out from behind the curve of the stately old tree beside it. The otter is looking around the tree to you as you walk down the path and return its gaze. Matt boiled down the essential elements of an otter to get at its most important and most elegant components. For instance, the sculptural otter has a left arm but no right arm. Why? Because it does not need a right arm. It still communicates otter, yet it is not an otter. Therein lies the magic of interpretation.
