We are saddened that Sarah Fetterman‘s aerial sculpture “Vertebrae” has left us, though quite gladdened for its very appreciated time with us. “Vertebrae” started its life in a 1 year exhibition at Seattle Center and another park location in Seattle before coming into the Sculpture Forest. Her art provided a mesmerizing view that was light and airy while creating volumes that filled the forest space with a story. Sarah was reminding us of how pieces of everything around us are interconnected in the web of life and ecosystem, including sometimes small pieces that are an important connection to a much larger whole.
The original white muslin fabric had started to get soiled by pollen, rain, and natural debris, and we did not feel it was representing the quality of Sarah’s work in that condition. She originally was going to come up from her new home in California to “re-skin” it over the course of a couple weeks, though that changed when her schedule become over-booked with art commissions this year. So, we all made the difficult decision to take it down. Thank you to volunteers Dick, Ken, Robert, Lydia, and Michael for helping with the de-commissioning process.
We very much appreciate Sarah’s vision, talent, and enthusiasm in sharing with the Sculpture Forest community. We are extremely glad that “Vertebrae” was a part of everyone’s experience for over three years, and we hope you were able to enjoy it before it’s departure.
Thank you so much, Sarah!
