Happy PentaBirthday to all of us! Our shared community of volunteers, artists, donors, and participating visitors is officially 5 years old.
When we opened Friday October 23, 2020, the world was deep into COVID response. By county regulations, we could not even tell anyone about our “grand opening” ribbon cutting ceremony since a maximum of 10 people were allowed to congregate at once. With some local dignitaries and family, we quickly maxed out the 10. Our group photo was even taken by a visitor who was part of another group that did not count toward our group.
We had thought about delaying the opening due to COVID, though the timing actually worked out great: People were hungry to get outdoors, experience nature, and breathe freely. The directional flow of our loop trails, designed to increase spacing between visitors for privacy and peacefulness, had the unintended benefit of also accomplishing “social distancing”.
Our first two visitors, a couple from Portland, happened to be driving by and pulled into the parking lot after seeing the sign, not even knowing about us beforehand. They thoroughly enjoyed their unexpected discovery. Since then, we have welcomed hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world. Each person comes with a different reason and background to experience where art enhances nature and nature enhances art.
What a journey it has been. We are even more excited for the next 5, 50, and 500 years. Thank you for your support!!! We hope that you walk out of the park feeling more joyful and enthused than when you walked in, inspired by the creative possibilities of art and the beauty of nature.
